Information Rita Needs and Response

We will post here the Needs of our churches and communities in East Texas Here.

Katrina Needs

David Buss in Baton Rouge will be heading up the volunteer effort for Lutheran Disaster Response.  They continue to be in need of volunteers.  They will be setting up three base camps for volunteers: Atonement, Metarie; Lamb of God, Slidell, and Good Shepherd, Biloxi. Each of these camps will be able to provide housing for up to 100 volunteers.
For more information call Pastor David Buss, 225-272-3110 or John Ellwanger, 1-800-951-3478.

From John Ellwanger:

I got an email from Mark Joeckel. He would appreciate help in finding volunteers with RV's to take a work crew to Baton Rouge and then go from there to wherever the Southern District sees as the greatest need. Or, it could be diverted to places effected by Rita. He was ready to head out this coming Monday, but now is waiting to see what Rita does. It would be helpful to put on the Katrina and Rita websites a plea for volunteers with RV's willing to work with cleanup where needed.

Volunteers Needed Prospects and Rita Update

All,

I would suggest that we get ready to receive volunteers for servicing the Golden Triangle area with food, clothing, water, and other assistance.  Recent local news is suggesting that if Rita makes landfall around Port Arthur that around 6000 homes will be destroyed.  We have churches in Port Arthur, Groves, Nederland, Beaumont, Orange and Winnie...church workers, members, churches, and communities will be greatly affected.

Later today I will most likely be unable to communicate through the Internet and eventually by phone...while the center track shows it about dead on to Port Arthur, we will still be receiving winds in the neighborhood of 65-85 mph.  That will cause trees to be uprooted, powerlines to go down, and phone lines to be down.  Winds have already started to increase as I write this...clouds are rolling in...please check the "my comments" section of the Rita site...I added a story about delivering food just a while ago.

I have talked with numerous church workers so far this morning...we are "hunkering" down and watching the "wobbles" from my "command center": recliner, laptop, tv, radio, cell phone and soda...trying to keep everything in order.

Also, as some of you know, I still have about  19,000 (31 cases) little booklets from the American Bible Society, "God is Our Shelter and Strength" that we can distribute during the aftermath of Rita...As some of you know, I got them free to share in such situations.

I'll continue to be online as long as the Internet is operative...and by phone as long as that lasts.  If I'm unavailable, please route items to be listed on the Rita Website to Steve Misch and Bruce Wurdeman...I don't think they will be effected by Rita...

Our team is great...we are ministers indeed in His service.

Blessings to all.....Lou
