MINISTRY STATISTICS

The most exciting feature in Area A is that the Gospel is proclaimed. The average worship attendance in the LCMS congregations in Area A in the year 2008 is seventy people each week. The aggregate number of worshippers in Area A each week is approximately 3,637.  There are sixty-one active ministries ranging from stand alone congregations in rural settings, to multiple staff ministries with elementary schools, to campus ministry.

While there are sparsely populated areas of the region, including Loving County near the New Mexico border which has only thirty-four residents and no church, there are several large and growing cities in Area A. These include Amarillo, Lubbock, neighbors Midland and Odessa, San Angelo, Abilene, and Wichita Falls.  Sixteen of the sixty-one active ministries in Area A are located in these cities.

The remainder of the sixty-one ministries are located in rural and small town contexts.  One such ministry is St. John's in Lariat, TX (pictured to the right.)

The ministry in Area A shares many of the challenges facing the entire State.  There is a decline in people attending worship on Sunday.  There is always a search for resources to support the work of the church.

There are also unique challenges for ministry in Area A.  Generally speaking, people are not moving into the area.  Many have moved away and new people are few.
